Blending Quotes Day 2

Today's Goal: Practice taking quotes from Homeless bird and "blending them" into your sentences. This is a super important skill. You may also hear it called "integrating" your quotes.

Unit Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details

The Plan:
  1. Blending Quotes Stations:
    Task Cards
    Student Guide
    Review Posters
Video for Station 5: HERE IS THE VIDEO YOU NEED
  2. A SURVEY before Break
Blending Quotes:
This is a skill that you'll be practicing FOREVER.
It's also something that I noticed you had a hard time doing on your one-pagers, and is going to be really important for your writing moving forward.
Hopefully if we stop and just focus on this, it will help you and your writing.

HERE IS THE VIDEO YOU NEED

Reminders/Homework:
  • Catch up on work if you need to. Fill out Rescore Requests. REEEEEAAAAAADDDDDDD.

Lit(erature) Thursday #2 (of 6!)

Today's Goal: Share and reflect on your independent reading.

The Plan:
  1. Lit Thursday -  IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM fill out this week's progress tracker
  2. If and when you finish a book, let me know by filling out this form
  3. Find a task to work on.
  4. Finish filling out this week's progress tracker - that's your exit ticket.
Keep in mind the following Lit Thursday expectations:
  • Two new books finished by May 3!
  • Some activities require friends, some don't. Some are simple, some are more complex. You have to decide what you are willing to dedicate yourself to completing, but you also need to think about how to make your content strong regardless.

Reminders/Homework:
  • You should plan to have completed one whole book by the time you back from spring break. That will keep you on track for the term!
  • Make edits to your one-pager if you need to. I EXPECT that if you didn't reach the "competent" level, that you make revisions.
    • IF you revise, you MUST return your original one-pager and rubric to me.
    • The work we do today and Friday should help you.

What's up with all the stickies?!

Today's Goal: Gather evidence of the topics we have been tracking throughout this novel to create a database of useful quotes!

Unit Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

The Plan:
  1. Read
  2. P5 Finish Homeless Bird
  3. Evidence Form
Stickies Explained:
There are SO MANY benefits for you as reader and as a thinking for having tracked these topics as we read. Here are a few:
  • It helps give you something to focus on while reading beyond simply "what happened?" This is good for your brain.
  • It improves your critical thinking skills. This is also good for your brain.
  • It helps you make connections between ideas at the beginning AND end of the book.
  • You have marked important ideas already so when you need evidence, you don't have to reread the entire book.
  • It helps those of us who are easily distracted stay on task a bit more because it gives us purpose.
  • If done carefully, many of your notes should help you with the essay we are going to write when we get back from break. It's not a perfect system, but I guarantee you it will be easier than if I had not made you use sticky notes. If I'm wrong, I will give you a jolly rancher because I can afford those and also I'm not wrong.

Reminders/Homework:
  • No Achieve
  • Complete the Evidence form if didn't do it or if you were absent.
  • Read a book! (You should have at least one book complete by the end of spring break!)
  • Make edits to your one-pager if you need to. I EXPECT that if you didn't reach the "competent" level, that you make revisions.
    • IF you revise, you MUST return your original one-pager and rubric to me.

Let's Finish Homeless Bird

Thread for embroidery!
Today's Goal: READ HOMELESS BIRD. Let's finish it!

Unit Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

Question to think about as we continue this book:
How do each of the characters in Homeless Bird find happiness? Many characters work towards happiness in different ways. How are they similar or different? Can you relate to any of their ways of finding happiness?

The Plan:

  1. Read independently
  2. Read Homeless Bird
  3. Finish Homeless Bird
  4. Discuss thoughts on the book/exit ticket if there is time.

Reading Actively:

You are expected to place at least two stickies for every chapter.
Do not put a sticky on the page unless you label it:
*Home/Family
*Perseverance
*Dreams, Hopes, and Plans
*Gender

*happiness and well-being
*something else super important that you don't want to forget?

Reminders/Homework:
  • If you do not have at least TWO sticky notes labeled in EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER of Homeless Bird, you should spend some time tonight doing that.
  • No Achieve this week.
  • Catch up on late work.
  • READ AT HOME.

Chapter 10 (or more?)

Today's Goal: READ HOMELESS BIRD (Seriously. We're going to read a lot today. I know you are anxious to see what happens to Koly. We will finish this book on Monday.)

Important note about Achieve in the HW section below.

  2. Fill out the first row of your "Lit Thursday Progress Tracker" that I didn't get to you yesterday.
  3. Read Homeless Bird
  4. Read more Homeless Bird
  5. All the Homeless Birds (plus some discussion, probably)

Reminders/Homework:
  • Two Achieve articles due by Friday at midnight
    • One Teacher Choice: "Turning Workouts into Watts"
      OR "How Ideas Become Real"
      • IMPORTANT NOTE: I am fully aware that all of you are finding this one harder than normal. I will take this into account when I score it. Please don't panic.
      • Another Option: I have given you a second teacher choice if you feel strongly that you want to do another one to replace it.
      • Another important note: Achieve assignments have ALMOST NO IMPACT on your grade at this point in the semester if you are doing them each week. A low score one week IS OKAY. I PROMISE.
      • One more: They're going to get harder. If you are not opening the article and looking at it while you answering the questions so that you can go FIND the answers, you are setting yourself up for failure. Use your resources! I believe in you!
    • One student choice
  • It's taking me a while to get through your One-Pagers because I'm giving lots of feedback. You will get them back on Monday. You will have the opportunity to revise, as always! :D

Foreshadowing Practice and Chapter 8

Unit Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2

Today's Goal: Gather evidence with a partner of foreshadowing in Chapter 7. FINISH Chapter EIGHT. Continue working on looking for moments that relate to the topics we are investigating while we read.

On Wednesday we discussed foreshadowing. If you don't remember, there's a clue in a picture on Wednesday's blog post if you scroll down.

With a partner, you will use Flipgrid to film a short video (max 2 minutes).

With a partner, find two different "clues" in the chapter and explain why those clues are foreshadowing this event. (This means you need to find QUOTES in the story as proof/evidence of the clue and READ the quotes out loud before sharing why they are examples of foreshadowing.) Make sure you tell your viewer the page #s.

You are expected to place at least two stickies for every chapter.

Student Walk-Out Information.

Today's class post is below, but here is some information that may be pertinent to you or someone in your life. It is important to me that I provide you with information, particularly since I have had students ask me about it. This is meant to be informative, not an endorsement, but I support your decisions, whatever they may be:

There is a National Student Walk-Out tomorrow, March 14, at 10am for 17 minutes.

"The nationwide protest is both a memorial and protest action. Students and teachers across the United States will walk out of their schools and universities to honor the lives of the 17 people killed at Stoneman Douglas and press lawmakers to pass stricter gun control laws, according to EMPOWER, the group organizing the action" (Adone, CNN). <--- Click on the link for full article.

From Aviara Oaks Administration (edited for clarity):
We will have the lobby of the MPR open for students to gather if they wish.  Administrative staff and campus supervisors will be monitoring behavior and ensuring safety for students out of class. The following are a few interesting pieces regarding student protests historically (Time magazine) and student rights (ACLU link).  In addition, there is a KTSA article that may be interesting to you.

Other Notes from Ms. Black:
  • READ the links above. They are genuinely good. The editorial has some really important ideas for you to think about. The CNN article talks about the actual walk-out.
  • The walk-out color is orange. Posters may help. Document it with pictures or something.
  • Ms. Black cannot walk out. Her responsibility is to the students in the room.
  • This takes place during advisory. If you go, you will be late to 4th period and marked tardy.
  • Walkouts are meant to be peaceful demonstrations, particularly when part of the goal is to honor lives lost. Do not participate if you cannot honor that. Do not participate if you are going to disrupt that in any way. It is the disruptions that will cause you to get in trouble, not the walk-out itself.
  • This walk-out is not about training teachers to have guns, but this is an actual piece of legislation that is making its way through the government and being talked about as a solution to gun violence. Ms. Black would like to simply state that she really would not like to be armed with a gun at school. She can't even keep track of her pens, and she would not feel safe with guns in her classroom or in any other classroom on a campus where she works with kids every day. Her responsibility is to students education and their safety when they are with me, and she can't ensure that with guns.
  • We have to be citizens who hear each other, so if you think this is the most important issue ever, or if you think all of the protests are stupid, it doesn't matter. Listen, and I encourage you not to silence each others' voices. We can't make fun of each other for using our voices and we can't bully others into doing things our way. It only makes things harder.

Let's focus on reading Homeless Bird.

Unit Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

How do each of the characters in Homeless Bird find happiness? Many characters work towards happiness in different ways. How are they similar or different? Can you relate to any of their ways of finding happiness?

Chapter 5

Today's Goal: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.1
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

The Plan:
  1. Read (Independent)
  2. Read Homeless Bird Chapter five
  3. Start your first One-Pager - Gather Evidence on Google Classroom

Reading Chapter FIVE

You are expected to place at least two stickies for every chapter.
Do not put a sticky on the page unless you label it:
*Home/Family
*Perseverance
*Dreams, Hopes, and Plans
*Gender
*something else super important that you don't want to forget?

One-Pager
Essentially here's the task:

1. Pick a text-based question and gather evidence to help you answer that question and summarize your findings.
2. Create a visual representation of your findings that includes significant quotes, ideas, and images.

Today, you will gather powerful quotes from the novel to help you answer a text-based question that you chose yesterday.

Full directions are on a document you can edit in Google Classroom.

Reminders/Homework:
  • Yo at least HALF of you have lost 20 percent of your grade because you didn't turn in the recording of "This I Believe." What's up with that? We spent two days in class on that and you need to make it happen.
  • Continue gathering evidence for your one-pager. The due date has been changed.
    • SHOW UP to class on Friday with Slides 5, 6, and 7 completely filled in. (on Google Classroom)
  • TWO Achieve Activities
    • Teacher Choice: "Are You There, Leo?"
    • One student choice
  • Keep reading. TWO books due by March 15 (that's next Thursday)
