Socratic Seminar Preparation

On Friday, we will be having a Socratic seminar on Homeless Bird before we write our argument essays about theme. It's been a while, so our hope is to remember all of the things that happened so that we feel more comfortable going into the writing task.

Your goal today is to finish it. I'm collecting it tomorrow.

Talk to each other! Support each other! Find juicy quotes you forgot about!

If finished with your Socratic Prep, here's a challenge:

Our goal next week is to choose one THEME to write about from the story.
  • Watch this video
  • Turn your Socratic Seminar Preparation guide over and do the following on the back:
    • 1. Share one book or movie that you love and see if you can determine one possible theme of that story. Write what you think the theme is and WHY.
    • 2. Brainstorm possible themes for Homeless Bird. Seriously, write two or three different ideas that you might have, and see if you can explain why.
  • This is not an easy task. Try it out!

When you've finished all that, you can work on Achieve or read or something else if you ask and I give you permission.

Reminders/Homework:
  • Finish the three questions on your Socratic doc. I'm collecting it tomorrow.
  • Get Einstein Jr. Writing turned in like 3 days ago. (ASAP)

Lit(erature) Thursday #3 of 6

On Monday, I asked you to share one word to describe
the activity we completed outside. These were your words.
The bigger the word is, the more people said it.
Today's Goal: Share and reflect on your independent reading.

The Plan:
  1. Get you Einstein Jr. Articles out and put them on your desk for me to see.
  2. Lit Thursday -  IN GOOGLE CLASSROOM fill out this week's progress tracker

  4. Find a task to work on - remember you need to choose one item to complete in class today.
Keep in mind the following Lit Thursday expectations:
  • Two books finished by May 3! (If you don't fill out the form, it didn't happen)
  • Some activities require classmates, some don't. Some are simple, some are more complex. You have to decide what you are willing to dedicate yourself to completing, but you also need to think about how to make your content strong regardless.

Reminders/Homework:
  • You should be COMPLETELY DONE with at least one book by now.
  • You have about 3 weeks to read another book!

Achieve End of Year LevelSet

Today's Goal: Achieve LevelSet

Sorry I can't be here! Read ALL THE DIRECTIONS! I know this isn't the most exciting task, but it really is a good way to show all the amazing progress you've made this year. I really would like to see your honest effort.

The Plan:
  1. Get your books out, but don't read them yet.
  2. Go to Clever, login to Achieve, and complete the LevelSet, which should pop up for your immediately.
  3. Once you are done, put your computer away. You may read, so make sure you have your book out next to you. Some answers to the things you're thinking in your head right now:

"Ms. Black, Can I do other things that aren't reading?" No.
"Yeah, but what if it's really important and I need to ask my friend about this thing for science?" No.
"I forgot my book." Go get one off the shelf (or ask to go to the library) and check it out on your chromebook before you read it."I finished my book." Fill out the Form (the top button the sidebar) and then find a new one.
"Yeah but I have other missing assignments for YOUR class!" Yeah but if we don't make time to read, we never will. Now is the moment. Read a book.

Reminders/Homework:
  • PRINT OUT YOUR EINSTEIN ESSAY FOR TOMORROW.
  • Read a book
  • Also read a book.
