Welcome to Middle School!

I'm so glad we get to meet today!

Please do not touch the Play-Doh on your desk until instructed to.

Today's Goal: Get to know each other a little bit and create something!

My name is Ms. Black. As long as your schedule doesn't get switched around, I'll be your English teacher this year!

Agenda:
  1. Play-Doh Activity
  2. Questions/Concerns
Play-Doh

After instruction, you'll grab a tub of play-doh and use for one of the following prompts:

Your creation should (CHOOSE ONE):
  • represent something about you or something that is important to you.
  • represent something about your summer that you enjoyed
  • represents what you are looking most forward to this school year
Reminders:
  • If you can, see if you can visit this website at home. I have published MyConnect so you always have access to this on the home page, but you'll have to be patient: I'm still learning how to use MyConnect!
  • If you did not come to "School Year's Eve" last night or the paper ran out, here is the WELCOME LETTER that was posted on my door. Feel free to review.

Monthly Mindfulness

Today's Goal: Monthly Mindfulness and Play-Doh (Okay, "play-doh" isn't really a goal, but we're going to use it to talk about goals, so it works)

The Plan:
  1. Play-Doh - our "back from break" tradition
  2. Monthly Mindfulness (Your copy is on Google Classroom)
  3. Reading Survey (You'll have to do this in one sitting because it is a Google Form, and it's due Tuesday night by midnight. I suggest you read the questions and then chat with friends and family before you fill it out)
  4. Recommend a Book (At least one submission due Tuesday night by midnight)
  5. If you're looking for your next book, here are some lists of the best books of 2017! Enjoy!
Play-Doh Prompt:

Using your Play-Doh, create something that represents one of the following:

  • A goal you have for 2018
  • A goal you have for the rest of the school year
  • Something from last year or last semester that you are proud of
It's your choice. Be prepared to share out.

Monthly Mindfulness

I want us to think about our actions and our intentions a little more mindfully. Monday, for some, is the worst day of the week. The weekend is over and you have to wake up early to start a whole new week of school and work. For others, Monday is a fresh start. A day where you get to start new and accomplish whatever you like TODAY, THIS WEEK, OR ANY TIME. It’s all in how you look at it. Let’s start our week (and the upcoming month) by setting some positive intentions.

Visit Google Classroom for this Mindfulness Reflection

Reminders/Homework:
  • Tomorrow we start with reading - don't forget your book!
    • Two whole books should be finished by January 15
  • Reading Survey - due Tuesday by Midnight
  • Recommend a Book - due Tuesday by Midnight
  • ONE Achieve article due this Friday by Midnight.
    • Your choice. No thought question.
    • Don't forget for your choice Achieve, you can do as many as you need to to get a score that you're proud of. I take the highest score that you receive on the first try
  • ALL Re-Score Requests MUST be submitted on or before January 19 if you want to raise scores from this semester. After that, all assignments grades are permanent for the semester. You will not be able to revise for more credit after this date.
